Review: A Scandal in Bohemia (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, #1) by Arthur Conan Doyle

A Scandal in Bohemia (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, #1)A Scandal in Bohemia by Arthur Conan Doyle
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

‘A Scandal in Bohemia’ is the first of the twelve short stories in ‘The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’. It is also my very first reading of Arthur Conan Doyle.
This short story follows both Watson and Sherlock as Sherlock Holmes is hired by the King of Bohemia to recover blackmail evidence, held by the woman whom the king once promised to marry, but abandoned for a woman of noble birth.
There were many things I loved about this short story, however the thing that caught my eye from the beginning was the following: “To Sherlock Holmes she is always the woman. I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex.” Now, isn’t that just a hook, line and sinker?
Congratulations to Arthur Conan Doyle on writing such a spectacular short story!
