Review

‘Civil Blood’ is the second novella in the ‘Best Left in the Shadows’ series and one that I loved due to the return of my favourite characters: Alys and Dax. The chemistry between these two was spectacular in the previous novella ‘Best Left in the Shadows’ and I couldn’t wait to see how it would evolve.
Alys still remains one of my favourite female protagonists. She is strong and capable, smart and witty. But best of all? She is a badass. I loved that about her. How she wasn’t afraid to pick up her knives and fight and she wasn’t afraid to stare death in the face and spit in it, too. Who wouldn’t fall in love with a character like that?
The characters that filled this novella ALL added their unique qualities to the story and made the plot so much better. I loved how well each and every one is developed with traits that made them unbelievably realistic. I felt like I could reach out and touch whomever I met; like I was passing them on the street and they were right in front of me.
‘Civil Blood’ was full of…well…blood. But it was also jam packed with adventure, fighting and crimes that made reading it a great deal of fun. The world of Lowside was delicately yet masterfully painted with brothels, run-down houses, brawls and mysterious crime lords. It really was one of a kind!
As always, beautiful storytelling that captured me from the first word. I greatly admire the skill Mark Gelineau and Joe King have with their writing. It rivals that of the best authors I know! They use plenty of imagery language that makes reading their novellas a pleasure to read and absolutely, inexplicable enchanting. And of course, I couldn’t spot any typos or spelling mistakes. Grammar and prose? Done to perfection!
What continues to fascinate me is the planning that has gone into each novella. The detailing of very sentence, actions and thoughts the characters made was just…awesome! I really have no words to describe how GREAT these novellas are! And that ending! THAT ENDING! No words. I. HAVE. DIED. And gone to heaven, of course!
Congratulations to Mark Gelineau and Joe King on publishing the second novella in the ‘Best Left in the Shadows’ series! Can’t wait for the third!

Rating Plan
1 star : Strongly did not like the book, writing and plot was bad. Idea of the book was against my liking.
2 star : Didn’t like it, didn’t find it interesting or gripping. Seemed to drag on to me.
3 star : An average book. Wasn’t bad or good. Everything else was well done. Original idea.
4 star : Like a 3 star but has potential to it as a series or the book grew on me as it progressed and certain scenes captured me. I Enjoyed it and read it in one sitting.
5 star : I LOVED IT! I stayed up late until 3 am. Author is a genius, characters, plot, idea, development, EVERYTHING was EXCELLENT. Nothing else can possibly be said except that its 5 STAR!
