‘Captivated by You’ was a novel that could have been a lot better if it:
a) Went through an editor.
b) Was better developed.
c) Wasn’t so clichéd.
It often moved without much description and the other often would write about pointless scenes and then miss out the ones that would have added depth to all the characters and the plot in the novel.
The story was completely unoriginal; it had an overused storyline, plot and idea. It follows a young heiress, Kimberley Henderson, whose father owns half of the hotels in New Zealand. She has been sent by her father to Australia to meet up with prospective partners – ones whose business he intends to own half the shares of. The business her father intends to buy belongs to the Devereux family. That’s when she meets him, Julian, the guy she met three years ago on the dance floor; the man who so valiantly stood up for her safety when she was in danger. The guy she couldn’t stop dreaming about. Better yet, he’s a son of the Devereux family. Caught up in a whirlwind of passion and secrets, Kimberley tries to navigate between right and wrong…but how can she do that when nothing is as it seems.
First of all, the characters were simply weird and annoying. Kimberley was often caught up in silly arguments between herself and Julian. She would get mad at the slightest misunderstanding and start raging. This was just the complication in the novel. Most often I would wonder why she just didn’t look around and question anything. Didn’t it seem suspicious that some things did not match up? That everything fell neatly into her lap? She just seemed so accepting of everything that she hardly seemed to have a personality. She also wasn’t a stellar character when you think about what we are told in the beginning of the novel. She often leads guys on with no thought of their own feelings. I understand that most of them want sex, but she could have at least turned them down politely. Kimberley seemed to enjoy leading them on for fun.
The writing of this novel was also pretty poor. There were times when I would constantly think of a better or more accurate way to write a sentence. There was poor grammar, no spelling mistakes but a few typos.
The novel itself was a pretty short read. It was written in first person so we only see the story from one perspective and that is Kimberley’s. It would have drastically improved both the story plot and its quality but then it would probably have ruined the ending. I believe first person narration clouded the story for the reader and if multiple perspectives were added, at least a sense of anticipation, mystery or tension could have been added.
This leads us to…the ending. The ending was not what I expected. To say it surprised me is an understatement. It SHOCKED me. Anything you can think of, anything you can dream up, it will probably be wrong…and the complete opposite. I must admit, it will really surprise you. In my eyes, this redeemed the author.
This would’ve been a recommend read by me if the author went through an editor first. But the book is self-explanatory as it was self-published. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the story in the end and I can’t wait for the next novel in the series.
Congratulations to Wanitta Praks on yet another published book.
